Hawaiian Modern Primary Bath

Embarking on a Main Bath renovation for their home overlooking Keuka Lake, these homeowners sought Heather DeMoras Design Consultants to provide design services and project management.

They were unhappy with their original tight bathroom, which had a traditional tub/shower, and they hoped to incorporate a soaking tub and separate shower.  The couple was also disappointed with the interior location of the bathroom, without any natural light.  Finally, having a childhood spent in Hawaii, one of the couple was looking for a modern, but natural theme that recalled the materials of the islands.

Heather began by carefully documenting the space available and creating existing conditions plans.  With the floorplan drawn in digital format, Heather was able to design a space that incorporated all the elements the homeowners wished for – a wide vanity with ample storage, a luxurious soaking tub, and a separate shower area. In order to help the couple envision their new haven, Heather created a 3D model displaying the recommended features and finishes.  During meetings, the model was used to help refine the details of the bathroom and determine the optimal placement of all fixtures.

To maximize the space, the shower and tub were placed in a wet room, delineated with a glass partition for wide open sight lines.  A candle ledge above the tub provides a focal point in the dark tile accent wall and is a practical location for bath products.

At the soaking tub, at the vanity, and at the shower, the faucets and fixtures were selected with an eye to detail.  The architecturally inspired faucets take on a light gold appearance from the warm wood accents in the faucet handles and spouts.  The shower itself was configured to the owner’s wishes, with an adjustable hand-held wand, an invigorating rain head and body sprayers.

Natural light was brought into the space by punching new transom windows into the adjoining Main Bedroom, maintaining privacy while pouring in cheerful sunlight.  Other detail accents were added, including a false skylight, under-cabinet lights at the floating vanity, heated towel bars and a full length custom designed frameless recessed medicine cabinet.

The materials in the bathroom pay homage to the natural beauty of Hawaii, with black pebbles in the walls and floors, a Koa wood vanity, and a reeded wood-look wall tile.
