Coastal Farmhouse: Great Room Renovation

Heather DeMoras Design Consultants was contacted by the owners, a Rochester couple who were looking to transform their early 2000s Great Room. Although the room still functioned for them, they wanted to create a more up-to-date look that could better incorporate TV viewing and provide more seating for family gatherings. The owners wished to change the look of the existing yellow brick fireplace to something more current. They asked Heather for a coastal, modern look that would incorporate their love of the ocean and tropical regions of the world.

Using 3D models and furniture layout plans, Heather DeMoras Design Consultants presented options to show the Great Room’s full potential. Transformation of the fireplace was achieved with the addition of white wood panels to cover the upper fireplace and provide a backdrop for the TV. At the lower half of the fireplace and the hearth, the exposed brick was painted white, adding texture and continuity. White wood planks were added to the central portion of the ceiling to accentuate the vaulted ceiling and custom orb chandelier, creating a beautiful focal point. LED ceiling lighting on dimmers were added to allow for lighting level options throughout the day and night. The original half-wall dividing the kitchen and Great Room was repurposed by adding a granite countertop which serves as a functional connection to link both rooms. A custom dark-stained wood narrow art rail was added to hold art and decorative accessories and tie into the wood fireplace mantel.

Heather assisted the owners with finding a local builder to construct the design and also helped project manage the renovation. To complete the coastal theme, Heather worked with the owners to select furniture and upholstery, lamps, artwork, decorative accessories, and custom linen Roman shades.
